You may hate them or you may love them, but the truth of the matter is that these two types of bulbs are the heavyweights of the lighting world. One of them once reigned supreme, until the newer technology stepped up to challenge the king. Modern bulbs outclass filament bulbs, but it's not always clear how the two stack up.
